The novel The Old Man and Sea is based on a real story. The novel was first published in1952, with 100,000 copies being sOld and he was awarded The pulitzer prize in 1953 because of this novel.

1.3 The introduction to The background

hemingway’s life was adventurous and vivid but full of pains. having experienced The two world wars and suffered from The injuries, he was disappointed with The world at that time and became pessimistic about The future of huMan beings. influenced by The greedy and heedless way of life, and also as a spokesMan of “The lost generation”, hemingway’s works were vivid records for The life of those physically and mentally wounded sOldiers, illustrating Their loneliness and desperation. and in The Old Man and Sea, santiago, an Old fisherMan ventures into The gulf stream and hooks The biggest marlin that ever seen. Then he tries all his best to catch it all him alone with increasing exhaustion. he is compelled into a losing battle with sharks which leave him nothing but The skeleton of his marlin.

chapter2 plot and character

2.1 plot about The story

The Old Man and The Sea can be regarded as a heroic tragic novel. in The novel, The hero

is a broken fisherMan named santiago who truly tries his best to fight against his fate. in The story, santiago has not caught fish for 84 days, due to The fact that, Mandolin, a little boy, who used to sail with The Old Man, is forbidden from fishing with santiago by his parents who forced him to catch fish in anoTher “good-lucky” ship.

The Old Man insists on fishing alone, even though The boy asks for fishing tighter again. he goes into The deep Sea with few person have been to and at last, he succeeds in hooking a giant marlin which is eighteen-foot long and also is The largest fish he has ever known before. however, for its giant size and great strength, it is extremely difficult to catch The marlin. it has been towed for almost 48 hours using The line on his back to bear The weight of The giant fish. The broken, poor Old Man, with little food and sleep, has to suffer from great pains and fight against The fish. to his great delight, he wins The battle. on The third day at Sea, he finally catches The weakened marlin to The surface and harpoons it.

on his way home, he feels relaxed and a little proud of himself. he takes it for granted that he has already won The fight against fate. maybe he is correct. he lashes marlin alongside his boat because it is too big to be put in The boat. but, unfortunately, The appearance of sharks makes The Old Man in despair. The sharks attack The Old Man and The giant marlin in different direction for four times. The Old Man fights to kill The sharks with all his strength and everything he can use, but only to find a giant skeleton of his marlin. finally, The Old Man, nearly having lost everything he fought for, reaches The shore, struggles to his shack and falls into sound sleep. The most important thing is that he regains The respect from oThers and he is still a hero in people’s heart.

2.2 characters in The novel

2.2.1 The Old Man –santiago

The Old Man is characterized as someone who fights against defeat. he chooses to sail out to where The big fish promise to be. he catches The marlin after a three-day fight and tries to prevent The sharks from stealing his marlin despite The fact that he knows it is useless. when confronted with a choice between defeat and endurance, he chooses The latter. in The end, The Old Man’s physical suffering leads to a more significant spiritual triumph.

2.2.2 The marlin

in The story, marlin acts as The obstacle, that is to say, The ideal opponent. on The one hand,

he makes The Old Man feels desperate and hopeless, on The oTher hand, it is The marlin that makes The Old Man bring out The best in him--strength and courage. so The marlin is a great opponent which is worth being respected.

2.2.3 The sharks

sharks are also The opponent of The Old Man. however, They are greedy and graceless. actually , They stand for destructive power of The community. The Old Man actually wins no glory in battling with Them. They are not The great opponent.

2.2.4 The lions on The beach and The little boy

santiago dreams of The lions at play on The beaches of africa three times. lions represent energy and passion. The little boy is considerate and full of admiration to santiago, but in The meantime, The little boy actually brings The Old Man’s lost youth back, and make The Old Man recall The time when he was young. as a result, it is clear to know why santiago call The boy’s name when he is truly exhausted for it can bring him strength to go on fighting. so The dreams illustrate his brave, energetic and passionate heart, which means nothing can beat him.

chapter 3 my views on The book

3.1 detailed description and metaphor

in The novel, The author use lots of words to describe The Old Man’s hands, for one thing, to demonstrate his skills and experiences, for anoTher thing, to indicate that it is The marvelous hands that make The dream and miracle. The author also put lots of efforts in describing his expression which is firm and persistent. several descriptions about The weaTher not only suggest The situation where The Old Man involved in, but also illustrate The feeling of The Old Man. besides, The lions in his dream stand for The passionate, energetic heart which would be young forever.

3.2 perseverance, endurance and determination

it seems that The Old Man is a loser. but according to The words of The Old Man in The novel: “a person is not born must be defeated.” and “people do can be destroyed, but cannot be defeated.” from my point of view, death and pain are inevitable, but The great Man will refuse to give in to its power. furThermore, The Old Man tells us it is truly possible to transcend The natural law and The destructive forces of nature through efforts and fighting. he proves his

perseverance, endurance and determination through fighting with The opponents he chooses to confront with, and both fate and marlin are worthy of a fight. The battle brings him honor and pride and it also enables him to realize his most dignified destiny.

3.3 realism or allegory

when i first finished reading The book, i truly thought it was a allegory which is filled with imagination and seemed unrealistic and what it tells us was persistence and endurance. to my surprise, beyond what i think about, it is actually a great work which reflects realism. in The story, The author gives a detailed description about The preparation before he goes far to The deep Sea, how to deal with The marlin in almost three days, how to catch it and tie it alongside The skiff, and how to fight against The sharks, thanks to The minute description, we can easily get a clue in our whole process illustrate The limit of one’s endurance, They perfectly convey The dignity of soul without putting it into The story. we can endow santiago’s endurance with bravery and grace.

eventually, i tend to conclude my book report by quoting a judgment by halls tao mu:The Old Man and The Sea is an exception for strong and incredibly simple works, with a beauty that cannot be resisted.

第二篇:The Old Man and The Sea讀後感英語

a Man can be destroyed but never defeated.

The novel"The Old Man and The Sea" is simple in plot but profound in meanning. an unluky Old Man called santiago fished alone for 84 days without taking one fish. at The 85th day he found a exceptionally huge fish who is 2 feet longer than his skiff. in order to make a miracle ,he held The line for 2 day-and -nights, overed all The difficulties mentally and physically, finally he Managed to kill The fish and bound it to his skiff. however, groups of sharks came to his trophy by tracing its scent. The Old Man defeated all The sharks but lost The meat of The g tigered with wounds, he came back to The shore with The huge spine.

after finishing The story, an affection of respect mounted in me. what a tough, strong-minded Man he is. first, he has a clear, noble destination, or we can call it a powerful opponent, The great purple fish. in The story, The Old Man regarded The fish as The most "beautiful","noble","calm " thing he had said:"i love you and respect you very much, but i will kill you dead until this day end."it is generally known that in every circumstance, destination is always The most critictle step in one's journey. one can never do his utmost until he realize how lofty his goal is.

second, The procession of his fight against The fish plays an important role in The plot.. as we can imagine, an armless Old Man in a completely uncertain environment, confronted an enormous fish alone which is lager than his skiff. in such a rival of Man against The whole environment, all The belongings could be neglected but The will and intelligence. The Old Man was so keen to put all his strength into The competition that he even hated his cramp. maybe we'll never come cross that kind of dangerous situation, but

who knows how Many tough rival are confronting us in The future, all we can do is to calm down and face it bravely with our strong will and intelligence, just like The Old Man.

what impressd me most is The Old Man's reaction when he lost The fish slice by slice. one might think though he had spent a hard time in catching and killing The fish, he was still happy and satisfied in achieving his goal. but seeing what you got by risking your life robbed again and again by your own eyes can be doubtlessly unbearable. however, The Old Man choose to coping with this situation with optimism, as he once said, "think about something cheerful, every minute you are closer to home, you sail lighter for The loss of 40 pounds." sometimes we'll find our success or opportunity vanishing bit by bit, but if we get into desperation instead of trying to save what is remained, we would be defeated to The core.

although The Old Man lost every thing but The skeleton and scars at last, he is still The winer. sometimes, we are not reaching our destination although we spared no effort. but life is fulfilled by every drop of sweat and every single footprint. i think maybe that is what The novel really want to tell us. we can not surrender to destiny no matter how hard The it would be, Then can we finish our journey without regret. as The word by The Old Man goes " a Man can be destroyed but never defeated."

第三篇:The Old Man and The Sea讀後感

never give up

books are The stepping stones to huMan progress. every reader can learn and earn much from Them. as a student of university , i understand deeply that books are important and useful. in this summer holiday , i borrowed a novel named The Old Man and The Sea written by ernest hemingway. it’s not The first time that i have read it. but different from The last time , it’s written in english. on The one hand , it can help improve my english, on The oTher hand, it’s raTher interesting.

The Old Man and The Sea is The story of an epic battle between an Old, experienced fisherMan and a large marlin. The opens with The explanation that The fisherMan ,who is named santiago ,has gone 84days without catching a fish. he is so unlucky but never gives up. he tells his friend Mandolin, a little boy, that on The next day , he will venture far out into The gulf to fish, confident that his unlucky steak is near its end.

thus on The eighty-fifth day, santiago sets out alone and, by noon of The first day ,a big fish that he is sure is a marlin takes his bait. unable to pull in The great marlin, santiago instead finds The fish pulling his skiff. two days and two nights pass in this Manner ,during which The Old Man bears The tension of The line with his body. though he is wounded by The struggle and in pain, santiago expresses a compassionate appreciation for his adversary ,often referring him as a broTher. what is worse, in The next days, The fish begins to circle The skiff which makes santiago completely

worn out and almost in delirium. while santiago continues his journey back to The shore, shakes are attracted to The trail of blood left by The marlin in The water. having no oTher choices, he cannot help but fight against Them. though tired , he never give in, but let himself think about The high price The fish will bring him at The market and how Many people he will feed. as a result, he is full of energy.

by Then ,i have no idea that why santiago are able to keep up. to me, maybe i have already given up as There are so Many difficulties. it’s not easy to catch a giant marlin. it’s really hard to struggle with not only one but more than five sharks. what’s more, The weaTher on The Sea is terrible, sometimes rainy, sometimes windy. but The Man shows us that as long as you have a dream and a goal, nothing can stop you. however, we live a better life than The Old Man, There is no reason to complain or give up when face difficulty.

The sharks have almost devoured The marlin’s entire carcass, just leaving a skeleton. santiago struggles on The way to his shack, carrying The heavy mast on his shoulder. once home, he slumps onto his bed and falls into a deep sleep. he dreams of his youth – of lions on an african breach.

as far as i am concerned, The Old Man is rich. he is brave, have dreams and friend, he knows what he wants. we should learn The spirit of braveness, determination and so on from him. believe yourself and never

give up. nothing is serious. nothing can stop our steps to The goal.

plot summary

The Old Man and The Sea is The story of a battle between an Old, experienced cuban fisherMan and a large marlin. The novel opens with The explanation that The fisherMan, who is named santiago, has gone 84 days without catching a fish. santiago is considered "salao", The worst form of unlucky. in fact, he is so unlucky that his young apprentice, Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with The Old Man and been ordered to fish with more successful fishermen. still dedicated to The Old Man, however, The boy visits santiago's shack each night, hauling back his fishing gear, getting him food and discussing american baseball and his favorite player dimaggio. santiago tells Manolin that on The next day, he will venture far out into The gulf to fish, confident that his unlucky streak is near its end.

thus on The eighty-fifth day, santiago sets out alone, taking hisfar onto The gulf. he sets his lines and, by noon of The first day, a big fish that he is sure is a marlin takes his days and two nights pass in this Manner, during which The Old Man bears The tension of The line with his body. though he is wounded by The struggle and in pain, santiago expresses a compassionate appreciation for his adversary.

on The third day of The ordeal, The fish begins to circle The skiff, indicating his tiredness to The Old Man. santiago, now completely worn out and almost in delirium, uses all The strength he has left in him to pull The fish onto its side and stab The marlin with a , ending The long battle between The Old Man and The tenacious fish. santiago straps The marlin to The side of his skiff and heads home, thinking about The high price The fish will bring him at The market and how Many people he will feed.

while he continues his journey back to The shore, sharks are attracted to The trail of blood left by The marlin in The water. The first, a great , santiago kills with his harpoon, losing that weapon in The process. he makes a new harpoon by strapping his knife to The end of anto help ward off The next line of sharks; in total, five sharks are slain and Many oThers are driven away. but The sharks keep coming, and by nightfall The sharks have almost devoured The marlin's entire carcass, leaving a skeleton consisting mostly of its backbone, its tail and its head. finally reaching The shore before dawn on The next day, santiago struggles on The way to his shack, carrying The heavy mast on his shoulder. once home, he slumps onto his bed and falls into a deep sleep.

a group of fishermen gaTher The next day around The boat where The fish's skeleton is still attached. one of The fishermen measures it to be 18 feet from nose to tail. tourists at The nearby café mistakenly take it for a shark. Manolin, worried during The Old Man's endeavor, cries upon finding him safe asleep. when The Old Man wakes, They promise to fish togeTher once again. upon his return to sleep, santiago dreams of his youth—of lions on an african beach.

i have read this novel for total 3 times——in secondary school, in high school and a month ago. i still remember that my chinese teacher used to ask us a profound question that at The end of The story,do you think The Old Man finally has won this fight. my answer is “ubtedly”. it seems that The Old Man failed to defend The whole marlin from The attack of sharks. however, we can obviously find that it is not a simple fight between The Old Man and The sharks or The marlin. it is a war between The Old Man and powerful nature , a war that santiago fights against his fate that The author actually wants to show us. and in this way, he is absolutely The right champion.

until now, The most impressive part i want to mention here is The journey when he was boating on The ocean. this part actually makes up The whole body of this inspiring story, meanwhile, The author draw us readers a plenty of vivid pictures showing us The amazing strength of The marlin, The fierce and cruel of sharks and finally admirable courage and will of santiago,an Old unlucky Man. he came to become a hero in The boy’s eyes, in The town, and deeply in his own heart.

what’s more, i consider santiago is also The ideal hero in author’s heart, and hemingway was also in strong desire of being himself a hero which would be able to enhance his confidence to conquer all kinds of difficulties he might be confronted with and prospect of developing his bright future.
