斯卡堡本是由於維京人經常的登陸、作一些交換而形成的一個定期集市。在幾百年的時間裏，每年的秋天持續一個半月，現在的英國，還有這麼一個小鎮。
斯卡堡集市這首歌的歌詞至少追溯到十三世紀的英格蘭，至於曲調則更早，產生於蘇格蘭，很有可能受到了維京人和另一支偉大的蠻族凱爾特人的影響。維京人是那種大無畏的民族，而凱爾特則有着很多神祕難解的傳説，他們留給我們的印象當中，更多的是詭祕和傳奇，但是就是這些野蠻人創作了那首充盈着敏感的詩意和微妙的幽怨的歌。時常出現在腦子裏的圖像，是秋天的乾草温暖的氣味夾雜着野花的芬芳，被蕭索的秋風挾裹着，掠過大地和田野，掠過即將封凍的河流和永遠歎息的大海，一個孤獨的男人，獨自唱着憂傷的歌，消失在天地之間。
斯卡堡集市的第二句唱到了四種花朵，香芹、鼠尾草、迷迭香和百里香(Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme)，據説分別代表愛情的甜蜜，力量，忠誠和勇氣。而目前《斯卡堡集市》最著名的版本，也就是西蒙與加芬克爾（Simon and Garfunkel）為電影《畢業生》所創作的主題曲（當年曾超過了披頭士樂隊的白色專輯，登上了1968年暢銷歌曲排行榜的榜首），主要使用了“原版” 中“Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme”這一小部分。

英國童話―傑克和豆莖‖這個故事中，一個同名的傑克遭遇的巨人住在雲端的城堡裏。當傑克戰戰兢兢地躺在一旁的時候，巨人自言自語道：―fee, fi, fo, fum, 我聞到英國人的氣味了。‖後來這成為了英國著名的童謠。

題外話：這個故事似乎暗示殖民者與土著人的關係。那巨人像是殖民者眼中的土著人，有財富，但殘酷粗野，無頭腦，易上當。傑克像個殖民者，有心眼兒，十分貪婪。有了下金蛋的母雞，足矣，還要金銀幣幹什麼？當然要。多多益善。光蒐羅金銀，不夠檔灰，還不能忘記豎琴——殖民地的藝術品。
