在運輸過程中，貨物可能會遭到損害、丟失或偷竊。買方或賣方為了在遭受損失後得到補償，都事先根據具體情況向保險公司投保，辦理貨物的運輸保險。投保費用(保險費)由買賣雙方在合同中確定。投保人按保險金額、險別及保險費率向承保人(保險公司)支付保險費、領取保險單或保險憑證。
對於FOB 和CIF的交易，裝運完畢後，賣方應馬上向買方發出運送通知，以便買方能及時對貨物進行保險。對於CIF的交易，習慣上由賣方按發票金額的110%投保一切險(綜合險)。
就對外貿易而言，保險單上投保的險別有：
S.R.C.C (Stikes, Riots, Civil Commotions) 罷工，暴力，民變險
War Risk 戰爭險
Extraneous Risks附加險
ON Deck Risk 艙面險
Failure to Deliver Risk 交貨未到險
Rejection Risk 拒收險
Aflatoxin Risk 黃麴黴險
F.P.A (Free from Particular )平安險
W.A or W.P.A (With Average or With Particular Average) 水漬險
All Risks 綜合險，一切險
T.P.N.D (Theft, Pilferage & Non-delivery) 偷竊提貨不着險
Fresh and /or Rain Water Damage Risk 淡水魚淋險
Leakage Risk 滲漏險
Clash & Breakage Risks 碰損破碎險
Taint of odor Risk 污染氣味險
Hook Damage Risk 鈎損險
當貨物按CIF 條款成交時，賣方有責任在議付時出示或提交海洋運輸保險單或保險憑證。保險單上所列投保的險別。投保時，必須按實際情況填寫保險單， 提供一切可能影響保險條件的因素。保險公司在承保後，就履行其職責，若投保人遭受損失應按有關規定給予賠償。

Thank you for your E-mail of 1 November, quoting us for 500 metric tons of wheat, your quotation is for CIF terms. We regret to say that we prefer to have your quotation and offers on C&F terms.
Our position is that we have taken out an open policy with Lloyds of London.
Under the policy, when a shipment is made, all we have to do is to advise them of the particulars. We are on good terms with our underwriters and consequently receive premium rebates at regular intervals.
We would, however, be interested to know the scope of cover handled by your usual insurance company for our reference.
