我們平時所説的萬聖節(All Hallow's Day)，其實是萬聖節前夜(Halloween)，即10月31日，11月1日才是萬聖節。

萬聖節前夜又被叫做 “All Hallow E'en”， “The Eve of All Hallows”， “Hallow e'en”， 或者 “The eve of All Saintas'Day”。後來約定俗成被叫做 “Halloween”。

萬聖節前夜是西方國家的傳統節日，這一夜是一年中最“鬧鬼”的一夜，所以也叫“鬼節”。話説我們中國也有“鬼節”呢，即農曆七月十四的盂蘭節(Hungry Ghost Festival)，俗稱中元節。

在萬聖節前夜，小孩子們都開心的。不得了，等了一年的“不請吃就搗蛋”(Trick or treat) 呀！夜幕降臨，孩子們便迫不及待地穿上五顏六色(multi-colored) 的化粧服，戴上千奇百怪的面具(all sorts of strange masks)，提上一盞“傑克燈(jack-o'lantern)”跑出去挨家挨户的要糖、小點心或者零錢。小氣的人家就要倒黴了，小搗蛋鬼們 (trouble maker)會在門把手塗上肥皂，有時還把他們的貓塗上顏色。課堂作文網

現在，“Trunk or treat”似乎更加流行，在指定停車場(parking lot)，家長們會把車佈置成各種有趣、漂亮的主題，準備好零食，等待孩子們的“搗亂”。

由於萬聖夜臨近蘋果的豐收期，“咬蘋果”(Apple Biting) 也成了萬聖節前夜很流行的遊戲。遊戲時，大人們讓蘋果漂浮在裝滿水的盆裏，然後讓孩子們在不用手的條件下用嘴去咬蘋果，誰先咬到，誰就是優勝者。 另外焦糖蘋果(caramel apple, toffee apple)，熱蘋果西打(cider)，粟米糖(candy corn)，烘南瓜子(pumpkin seed) 等也是受歡迎的應節食品。
