1、裝扮聖誕樹
這個傳統指的是用彩燈、金箔、花環、飾品、糖果條等裝扮家裏的松樹。現如今的社會，聖誕樹也是歡慶節日必不可少的一部分。
2、點燃聖誕蠟燭
這個傳統指的是人們會在聖誕期間在屋子外面放一支已經點燃的蠟燭。即便在最黑暗的屋子裏邊，蠟燭也能給自己帶來光明，寓意着希望。在早些的年代，也就是__深受的時候，他們被禁止佈道禱告。因此，__們在屋外放一支蠟燭，暗示他們仍然會在心裏默默禱告。
3、烘烤聖誕蛋糕
這式傳統早在幾個世紀以前就流傳開了，以前人們在平安夜喝梅花粥。隨着時間 慢慢推移，人們還會享用果脯、蜂蜜以及香料食物等，隨後聖誕蛋糕便代替梅花粥出現了。聖誕蛋糕由雞蛋、黃油、甜點、水果等材料烘製而成。現如今的社會，聖誕蛋糕已成為聖誕菜譜不可或缺的一部分。
4、給親友送禮物
這個傳統源自一個古老的傳説：三位智者在聖誕節給嬰兒送出了禮物。每年聖誕節，親朋好友特別是孩子們都會互贈禮物，聖誕老人的故事也源自這個傳統。
5、唱聖誕頌歌
這是一個古老並且傳統的習俗：聖誕期間總是迴盪着一首又一首聖誕傳統歌曲。歌曲會給人們帶來歡樂，也增添了節日的氣氛。每年歡度聖誕的時候，《第一個聖誕節》、《鈴兒響叮噹》、《普世歡騰》等各種聖誕聖歌或頌歌都會奏響旋律。

聖誕節不少孩子以為是聖誕老公公誕生的日子。其實聖誕節是來自基督教習俗，是慶祝榮耀尊貴的上帝為了愛世人，便將他的獨生子耶穌基督道成肉身來到世間，成為人的樣式，與人一同承擔苦難、救贖世人。聖誕節就是慶祝聖子耶穌基督的誕生。而在西方慶祝聖誕節不是隻有聖誕節夜以及聖誕節當天，早在聖誕節前的四個星期日，便已經開始每週日慶祝耶穌誕生的習俗，這一段時間稱為“將臨期”。
在將臨節期，教會的佈置全都以藍紫色為主。聖壇的桌巾、講台的台帷、牧師袍的肩帶都是紫色。並且聖壇中央通常會放置一個用長青樹的葉子作的花環，中間有五枝紫色的長燭，每個星期日，便多點上一枝蠟燭。到最後的聖誕夜裏的“普世同慶”點上中間的最後一枝蠟燭。燭光象徵着在許多年前的聖嬰孩耶穌其第一聲啼哭裏，為這世上帶來了光明。
而聖誕老人其實是西元第三世紀的尼可萊斯主教。他曾冒死解救被處殛刑的政治犯、也揭發過貪婪官吏屯糧，使百姓渡過饑荒。在宗教被迫害時，被捕入獄，身上滿是鞭痕、鉗傷與烙印，仍堅持其信仰。而後半生留在米拉，設立孤兒院、照顧病患、貧民。尼可萊斯生平事蹟中，最膾炙人口的是他慷慨助人的行徑和對孩童的愛心，這些事蹟後來被兒童文學家，予以豐富的想像而成為我們現在所知聖誕老人故事。
聖誕節最重要的意義是講“饒恕”與“和好”，而非等待聖誕禮物。在這寧靜的夜晚，想一想有沒有人得罪你，你還沒原諒他、饒恕他呢？
“聖誕”原意為慶祝基督的誕生。這個詞英文 Christmas原為Christes Mass，是基督宗教的傳統，但是最早還是大公會教會的用詞。古代英文的Yule原無宗教的含義，只代表十二月與一月的冬季，以後才成為詩詞的用語(Yuletide)。
主降生後二、三百年，教會曾慶祝聖誕，但是在不同的日期。如今大家公認的聖誕在十二月二十五日，是羅馬皇君士坦丁所定的。但是學者的稽考，卻以為是在君士坦丁以後，約在三五四年羅馬主教李伯騮(Liberius)訂定的。在羅馬原有太陽神節(Feast of Saturn)，在十二月二十五日，羅馬全國慶祝這常勝的太陽神(Sol invictus)。教會無法廢除這異教的節日，卻以慶祝聖誕來取代，因為基督是世上的光，他是公義的日頭。
有人認為十二月二十五日既為異教的節日應該避免。甚至改至暑。但，世界都在十二月二十五日慶祝，怎樣更改，也無法使人忘記這個日子。
