這本書的主要內容是這樣的，湯姆的特點是‘論調皮搗蛋，誰敢與他比試！論勇敢機智，誰又能與它爭鋒’。

一開始，書中寫了湯姆很調皮，他跟一個男孩打架，並把他打哭了。因此，波莉姨媽對他很不好，經常有什麼事都冤枉他，後來才對他好起來。

湯姆、喬、哈克貝利都覺得父母不好，於是結夥當海盜。

有一天的三更半夜，三個“海盜”來到了墳地裏，波特、印第安和魯賓孫醫生在挖墳，波特、印第安要醫生再給他們幾百元錢。醫生不肯，就和他們打了起來，醫生拿起墓碑，把波特打倒在地，印第安拿起刀，一下子擁進了醫生的胸膛。那兩個孩子連滾帶爬地跑掉了。

後來，印第安繪聲繪色地向法官描繪着波特的罪行，並且有很多證人説：“那把刀就是證據。”印第安真是惡人先告狀，這些證人真是一派胡言。幸虧後來湯姆證明，波特才渡過難關。

最後，湯姆和哈克貝利，找到了一箱金子，過上了幸福的生活。

而我自己呢？我可能還不如湯姆，我雖然已經長大了，但我還有許多地方趕不上湯姆。比如：我不像湯姆一樣勇敢，勇敢的去維護正義，我不敢像他一樣去冒險。這些都是我的不足。所以，我要努力地學習湯姆，取他的長處，補我的短處，讓我變得更加完美。
